Justices of the Peace

Justices of the peace are elected every two years. They serve on the town's Board of Civil Authority and Board of Abatement and they often work at elections and deliver absentee ballots to voters at election time.

A justice of the peace can be a notary public and has all the acknowledgment powers of a notary public, though they must register as a notary with the state. The Vermont Secretary of State has created this Justice of the Peace Guide to further explain this role.
